Remote Patient Monitoring Comes to Neurology

Implantable loop recorders changed how arrhythmias are diagnosed. Continuous glucose monitors changed how diabetes is managed. In both cases the breakthrough was not a new treatment but a new stream of data from ordinary daily life.

Why neurology lagged

Brain conditions have lacked an equivalent measurable signal. Pressure inside the skull is the closest analogue, but until now it could only be obtained invasively, in hospital, for short periods. Neurologists have therefore relied on symptom diaries and periodic imaging.

What changes with home data

The infrastructure — secure upload, clinician dashboards, reimbursement pathways for remote monitoring — already exists. What has been missing is the sensor.
