
The brain is a complex and delicate organ, housed within the protective confines of the skull. Within this space a delicate balance of pressure is maintained, known as intracranial pressure (ICP). This article explores the causes and symptoms of elevated ICP, and the importance of early detection and treatment in preventing long-term damage and life-threatening outcomes.
What is elevated intracranial pressure?
ICP is the pressure inside the contents of the skull. The cranium contains three general compartments — brain, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and blood — and restricts expansion of the total intracranial volume. In healthy individuals these components reach equilibrium and maintain a normal ICP. For a normal adult at rest, ICP should remain between about 6 and 25 centimeters of water. An increase in the volume of any compartment raises ICP.
Causes of elevated intracranial pressure
- Traumatic brain injury — head injuries, especially with skull fractures, disrupt CSF flow and cause swelling and bleeding
- Stroke — disrupts normal CSF flow and causes swelling in the affected region
- Hemorrhage — bleeding within the skull increases intracranial volume
- Brain tumors — masses and associated edema raise pressure
- Hydrocephalus — abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid
- Infections such as meningitis and encephalitis
Symptoms of elevated ICP
- Headache, often worse in the morning or when lying down
- Nausea and vomiting
- Changes in vision, including blurred or double vision
- Confusion, drowsiness and decreased level of consciousness
- Papilledema — swelling of the optic disc
- Loss of balance or coordination
- Seizures, particularly if new or different from previous seizures
- Changes in personality or conduct
Not all individuals with increased ICP will have all of these symptoms. In some cases there may be no symptoms at all, which is why objective measurement matters.
Treatment options
Elevated ICP is a medical emergency, and treatment is based on the underlying cause. Addressing that cause can lower the pressure — for example, removing a tumor that is causing elevated pressure. Medications such as mannitol can be used to lower pressure and reduce fluid retention, and surgical options including CSF drainage or decompression are used when needed.
Why early detection matters
Because elevated ICP can progress silently and damage brain tissue, detecting a rising trend early gives clinicians the chance to intervene before symptoms become an emergency. Today that is difficult outside the intensive care unit — which is exactly the gap SensoBrain is working to close.
